The dust is settling in Germany now that the Italians have taken their party back to their adoring fans – the World Cup is over for another 4 years! I know it has been criticised for not living up to expectations but personally it has been one of my favourite world cups, a close second to the memory that was Italia 90! But after watching many matches throughout the competition, there are still things about football that I just don’t understand…
- I don’t understand why I let myself get caught up in the hype that is the English Team
- I don’t understand why penalties are still used to decide games
- I don’t understand why the English can’t take penalties
- I don’t understand why the best players don’t make the best team
- I don’t understand why Sepp Blatter has anything to do with Football
- I don’t understand why singers and bands sell their souls to cash in on a rubbish Football Anthem!
- I don’t understand why we put all our hopes in one player
- I don’t understand why over-paid footballers have to resort to cheating
- I don’t understand why racism is still a problem of the game
- I don’t understand why legends reveal their flaws on the largest stage
- I don’t understand why ITV bother to cover the football because everyone knows the BBC have the best coverage
- I don’t understand why referees often see that someone is diving and wave play on but NOT book that guy for falling so easily
but finally, and perhaps above all else……
- I don’t understand why in 4 years time I will have forgotten all of the above and will have convinced myself that England have the best chance in years of lifting the trophy! 🙂

In response to the first and last bullet point. I think it is just sheer patrotism and love for your country- England that gets you caught up in the hype, great hope, expectation and conviction that your country- England has and would have the best chance of winning the world cup. Everyone wishes that for his country.
Here is a teaser Dave, the 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa, and there is a growing conviction that an African country- perhaps Nigeria has the best chance of lifting the trophy. Hahaha!
One thing I did change this time – whenever there was a choice I watched on ITV. Why? John Motson! How did he ever get a job as a football commentator? He always prefaces every comment with ‘Oh’. Not a patch on Kenneth Wolstenhome: ‘some people are on the pitch; they think it’s all over…it is now!’ Poetry.
