I’ll be very clear so as not to get in trouble – they are not my words but lyrics from a Hillsongs tune ‘All the Heavens’. I listened and sang along to that this morning on the way to work and sit here at the start of the day struck by the truth of those opening lines.
Tonight the church I am a part of is meeting in Pontypridd – and that is to show that the whole earth is filled with the King’s glory. It may be from a house (and a very nice house Mr & Mrs Knight!) in Church Village….but all the nations will hear us praising the King.
It’s not about Ponty alone. Firstly, when we gather together, Christ Jesus himself is present with us and moves among us by his Holy Spirit. Because Christ was “in the beginning” (John 1:1), because he was before creation and outside of time as we understand it – the very presence of Christ in our midst ensures that our gathering has an eternal quality and purpose!
- We meet in Pontypridd.
- We’re are heard in the heavens.
- We effect all eternity.
Secondly, it’s about the place where we come to. Hebrews 12:22-24: “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
We meet in Pontypridd, but we come to the dwelling place of God, to the place where our spiritual ancestors Abraham, David, Paul and more all now gather as the witnesses cheering us on. We meet in a house, but we come to Mount Zion, the mountain of the Lord! We come to meet with friends, but we come and join in with thousands upon thousands of angels in their joyful gathering! We meet to worship the King of Kings but we come and actually enter Jesus’ presence and come close to the prophetic word of God!
We don’t see what it does with our natural eyes but our worship rises to the King and journeys to the house of God, to the Throne of the great “I Am”. That’s why when I listen and sing the lyrics which I wrote at the start of this entry, it becomes so much more than a pleasant melody, a warm and uplifting tune….it hits home with truth and encouragement.
When we meet tonight in Pontypridd we will have a great time in worship and we will see the Holy Spirit move among us in power. What we may not see is what happens outside of that house, but our confidence is this: our worship has eternal effect and becomes a part of heavens reality. Whether you meet in Pontypridd with us or anywhere in the world….look bigger and see wider – the whole earth is filled with the glory of the King!
